Plastic Pollution in Pakistan

Environmental pollution has become a vile threat to humans and wildlife globally. Today, the air we inhale is polluted. The water we drink is highly unhygienic. The food we consume has some kind of pollution. There is a huge amount of smoke coming out from vehicles and motor cars that envelop all the big cities around the world.

It is all because of growing population in the world – one of the leading causes of increasing environmental pollution. Today it is more than 7 billion people in the world and Pakistan has 207 million. It is a matter of fact that as the population continues to grow, so does the amount of garbage that people produce. To spend easy and luxurious lifestyle people need effortlessly disposable products, such as soda cans or bottles of water. We have become a disposable state and nation; however, it is a bitter reality that due to huge hoard of these products has led to increasing amounts of plastic pollution in Pakistan.

Plastic is not a something good object, as it is composed of major toxic pollutants that have potential to cause great harm to the environment in the form of air, water and land pollution. In addition, it has started to impact negatively on the natural ecosystem and creates problems for wildlife and human population such as killing of plants life and posing dangers to local animals.

According to the study, about 8 million tonnes of plastics are deliberately dumped in the oceans globally. Besides, it also finds its way due to wind and flow of rivers and release of urban overflow in the water channels. It is shocking to know that simplest plastic normally used in grocery store bags take over 100 years to collapse, though the complex ones take between 100 to 600 years or even beyond that to decompose.

It is further estimated that food wrappers and containers produce 31.15 percent of pollution in environment. Bottles and containers cap produce 15.5 percent of pollution in environment. Plastic bags cause 11.18 percent environmental pollution, straw and stirrers produce 8.13 percent, beverage bottles cause 7.27 percent pollution in the environment.

Since 1967 global plastic production has increased from 2 million tonnes to 380 million tonnes, almost three times faster than world GDP. Since 1950, the production of plastic wastes was 6.30 of that only 9 percent has been recycled and another 12 percent burned. The rest of wastes have been dumped in landfills or the natural environment. There are various countries in the world today has duly banned use of plastic bags such as Bangladesh, France, and Rwanda. Pakistan seems far-away banning the hazardous production and excessive consumption of plastic related objects.

There are various environmental threats in Pakistan;from villages to small towns and big cities everywhere – on the street corners, in the air, on the seashores, in the freshwater bodies,in the water channels, we find heaps of wastes of them abundant is plastics-related such as wrappers, bottles, plastic bags, containers, plastic caps, cables and etc. Our once very beautiful seashore of Karachi now gives a bleak look due to tons of garbage over there.

In Pakistan production and usage of plastic related objects is increasing, whatever we buy from market bring that in plastic bags, at home we eat in plastic utensils, instead of mud pitcher for drinking water we use plastic made cooler, at home we keep flour, rice, garam masala and all other usable things in plastic containers or small bowls. We drink bottled water every day, we use plastic mobile pouch, students take plastic made geometry to school, and the chips we buy are packed in plastic wrappers. It means that in today’s time plastic has been our soulmate and it has been indispensable to take it away from our lives.

According to one of the research studies conducted by World Wide Fund Pakistan, it demonstrates that about65 percent of waste that spoilsbeauty of beaches along Pakistan’s coast consist of plastics that includes mineral water bottles, caps, plastic bags, balloons, packages, shoes, discarded fishing nets and wreckedapparatuses. The study further reveals that only at Clifton Karachi contributes about 50 percent of plastic trash.

One of the report mentions that there are around 250 million tonnes of garbage consists of grass clippings, bottles, product packaging plastic bags, appliances, furniture, clothing, batteries and food scrap. That’s about 1.95 kg of waste per person per day.Plastic pollution also negatively impact on overall economy as it causes an estimated damage to marine ecosystem annually, and loss to tourism, fishing and shipping industries.

To conclude plastic pollution is a crucial environmental menace and is a major problem for marine and freshwater lakes in Pakistan; it destroys habitats and adversely impacts wildlife species.Apart from above mentioned effects from plastic pollution some of the extremely disturbing impacts are, it upsets the food chains, pollutes groundwater, land and air. Also it kills animals and is highly poisonous and expensive. Therefore, on very serious note government, relevant institutes and organizations, and policy makers need to think and take action on this very afflicting ecological threat.

Be good to Environment, it will be good to you.

A few days ago I was traveling with my grandfather along the roads of LAHORE. Gossips are being done among us and suddenly a topic of discussion started on “Environment” and I was really shocked when my grandfather emphasize loudly that man has vanished the environment both implicitly and explicitly, curiously I asked them that how I don’t get your point and he answer me in detail and below I am sharing it with you.

He started by defining the environment as: “Environment is everything around us. It may be in a geographical form or spiritual form”

A geographical environment can be defined as all the physical things around human under, above or around him which may affect their life in any perspective. The examples are quoted as   mountains, rivers, atmosphere and many more

Whereas spiritual environment is deeply in link with human behaviours. It includes relations of people with each other, their dependence on each other etc.

He said: “We won’t have the society if we destroy our environment”

Looking outside the car window, he pointed out, towards some burning bags which are causing jet black smoke and told me that ‘Every action has equal and opposite nature’ as we people are destroying our nature by our such worst activities we must hope that environment is also going to harm us with same force and even it is happening .  We are playing a foul game with it, it will also play a foul game with us.

First we discussed, how we are destroying our environment. The major reason is pollution we are polluting our nature in various ways and the centre of appetite is traffic pollution. We are increasing our number of vehicles day by day without knowing its harms. The smoke of the traffic vehicle is containing tiny particles which are very injurious to our health as well as for our environment also. On the other side, our industry is also playing a crucial role in defaming the environment. The water from industries in going on to mix with pure water of river as well as it is also spoiling underground water.

Now an important thing that I was noting is changes in climate. As summer is not on time, it is getting long and long, low rainfalls, contraction of winter tenure, seasons are getting mild and mild day by day and many more all are because of changes in the environment. Global warming is a great issue which is damaging our environment day by day. It is damaging us in many ways. Temperature is going on an increase, as well as it is affecting health as well such as skin cancer etc.

He told me that human for theircentre of appetite cutting hills, forests, using nuclear program that is damaging our environment. Nature has provided us lush green and healthy environment but humans are going to change it. They are making it even worst. Cutting of trees is the backbone issue of pollution. Humans are not happy with nature as it is. Human is CROWN OF ALL CREATURES but kept their eyes close in the matter of environment and its stability. Human is worse in relative to destroying the environment.

Change in environment has many effects on human life in several ways. It can effect physically or behaviourally. While talking about physical effects it as

  • Health effects
  • Pollution effects
  • Climatic effects
  • Food effects

And many more

The important thing here is to discuss the spiritual effects of changes in environment. Environment has damaged human spiritually a lot as:

  • Harshness in behaviour:

Humans are getting harsh and harsh day by day. People have zero patience in them. They are not agree to tolerate even a little issue. People are fighting with each other on lame basis.  If we compare a human of today with a man of a century ago he was cool minded, he doesn’t argue or fight on non-genuine issues. He has qualities of tolerance but now it is not in sight. This all is happening just because environment is not healthy. There are many particles in atmosphere which made him nerves full of anxiety.

  • Mentally disturbed human:

Today a human is mentally disturbed. He is a patient of anxiety and depression. Even ill children are also facing this problem and all is due to their environment. People are living in such environment where there is no mental peace. People are surrounded with injurious things and most important is Noise pollution. Noise pollution has effected a human a lot and made him a patient.

  • Role of technology:

Technology has also played an important role in human’s life. With the time there is advancement in technology and with many merits technology is spreading people from one another. Mobiles, laptops, internet usage limited people to their rooms and cut off them from family and friends and people are in lugged in idle pursuits. Advancement in technology also affected human environment very badly but its effect is only dependent upon human that how he uses it.

After much discussion, he stopped and said now let’s talk about some positive perspective and said

“PURE ENVIRONMENT HAS PURE MINDS”

The environment has gifted a lot to a man. The man has to be thankful for the environment for many blessings as a human can still enjoy a healthy and sound life. The environment has a great effect on lives of people so still, there are many good people who influence the society in good manners. Hazard Muhammad S.A.W and Abdul Sitar in Delhi are great examples who change the whole environment and spread peace, love, and care.

The environment can be very beneficial if it is treated in well and kind way. We all know as you sow, so shall you reap. The same case is in the environment, if we are environment-friendly then environment has also a great friendlier behaviour.  It totally depends upon us that how we are, if we use pollution free vehicles, chimneys in burners, properly dispose of things then the environment will not harm us. We all are born of this environment and it’s our duty to take care of the environment.

While in this time we reach home and he concluded as:The environment is everything around us and the changes made by humans are harming it, in the result Environment is harming us.

Be good to Environment, it will be good to you.

And adopt some precautionary measures as

    Avoid spreading pollution

    be nature-friendly

    Plant the trees

    Save natural heritance

Yet We havent learned to Walk

The folks don’t have leisure for their generations, it’s the reality and we are even in dome state as our eyes are open but we are unable to see that. Let me make you realize some of the core ailment’s that are challenging. I remember once the professor said “mind is a terrible thing to waste”

Though the burden being generated by us for our descendants is piling up right now, this pose of some middle-aged scientists would make you think that how much busy we are in our conversations, routines and so-called activities from our daily life. They had forgotten what was behind them, they had forgotten the coming life’s and indulge their selves in their own.

Here I have this picture being taken on a study tour of research students but the matter of consideration is that they aren’t aware of the polluted environment and busy in chat and the selfie session which is considered as much important as drinking water at the time of @saftaar. But hereby I pledge to all the communities, casts, societies and whatever you feel proud calling be unite when it comes to cleanliness as our religion emphasis on this particular issue. This should be our priority to come up with solutions as might few would say what are the comprehensive solutions in this sort of idea.

let’s just dive into these:

  1. Make yourself feel that it’s your issue, just start owing it
  2. Start addressing this issue
  3. Do something for the betterment
  4. Don’t feel bad when you heard the things about you, because whenever you will do something worthwhile there will be criticism

Nowadays we are not taking these environmental issues as seriously as it needs to be that’s why I said we haven’t learned to walk because it’s the place where we live in so we have to be concerned about that. what awesome words said, Robert Swan:

“The greatest threat to our planet is the believe that someone else will it

Plastic the robust Giant:  Make Room for the Marine.

Oceans provide a home for millions of species on Earth, and it is essential for human life. Unfortunately, while many species depend on the ocean for its ability to create food and oxygen, human activities can negatively impact the ocean and its wildlife.

Plastic is a versatile, light weighted, flexible, moisture, strong and relatively in-expensive. Those are the attractive qualities that lead us around the world, to such a voracious appetite and over-consumption of plastic goods. Our tremendous attraction to plastic, coupled with an undeniable behavioral propensity of increasingly over consuming, discarding, littering and thus polluting, has a combination of lethal nature.

The presence of plastic pollution debris is a serious threat to freshwater and marine ecology. Tiny particles of plastic debris (often called microplastics) are so pervasive in the aquatic ecosystem that we find them in seafood and table salt. Marine organisms ingest or are entangled by plastic, sometimes with fatal consequence. Plastic pollution may impact biodiversity, ecosystem services, food security and human health. Despite the ubiquity of plastic pollution, stemming it, is not an adreadful task to address.

Plastic pollution is poisoning a serious threat to marine life and its ecosystem. The issue of plastic pollution along Pakistan’s coast is a major concern and is worsening due to its inadequate solid waste disposal system. Most of the plastic that enters the sea become a serious threat to marine life due to their non-degradable nature.

It is estimated that about eight million tons of plastic are deliberately dumped in the sea globally and finds its way there through winds or flow of the river and urban run-off. This is approximately equivalent to the dumbing of a garbage truck into the marine water every minute.

A study conducted by Dutch researchers on marine life in the North Sea reported that the local seagull population has ingested so much plastic, that an average of 30 plastic pieces could be found in one seagull’s stomach.

On every simple walk on any beach, the plastic waste spectacle is present. All over the world the statistics are ever growing and staggering.

In the ocean, plastic debris injures and kills fish, seabirds and marine mammals. Marine plastic pollution has impacted at least 267 species worldwide, including 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species. The impacts include fatalities as a result of ingestion, starvation, suffocation, infection, drowning, and entanglement.

Seabirds that feed on the ocean surface are especially prone to ingesting plastic debris that floats. Adults feed these items to their chicks resulting in detrimental effects on chick growth and survival. One study found that approximately 98% of chicks sampled contained plastic and the quantity of plastic being ingested was increasing over time.

Preventing the generation of disposable products as much as possible reduces the amount of money needed for controlling and managing trash and litter. Prevention is both cost-effective and better for the environment.

An estimated one hundred million metric tons of plastic are present in the Earth’s oceans. If one plastic bag can bring down birds and fish, imagine the consequences of this number. The effects of plastic on marine life are so devastating, soon the planet’s sea animals and birds will end up as nothing but statistics. Species will slowly become endangered and then extinct. Keep our oceans clean. Try substituting plastic with paper or recyclable products. Reduce, reuse and recycle before it is too late for the Earth’s oceans.
